Just a few hours ago, the case for Apple’s next iPhone being called theiPhone 5 seemed more assured than ever. The very prominent “5″ in the invitations Apple started distributing to its upcoming press event appeared to leave little to the imagination. Wouldn’t you know it, though, there’s already a newly-leaked image out that suggests Apple might pull another 2012 iPad with the release of this smartphone.
The boxes coming off this industrial press, apparently destined to house the next iPhone, don’t refer to the product as the iPhone 5. Instead, we get the very generic-sounding “the new iPhone”.
Could this really be the direction Apple intends to head? No more iPhone 3, 3GS, or so-forth, and instead we just have one iPhone and one iPad, and it’s up to us to try and work out a way to talk about them over the years without confusing the heck out of you? We’d rather that wasn’t the case, but knowing Apple, it’s just going to do whatever it pleases. We’ll know for sure in about a week.
